Dr Eric Forsthoefel on Factors Increasing the Number of Patients Visiting Emergency Rooms for Non-Urgent Medical Case

The increasing number of people with non-urgent medical cases choosing to seek treatment or medical attention in the emergency department is a cause for alarm. Dr Eric Forsthoefel, in one of his interviews, noted that this situation had attracted medical care from the emergency department where resources are being used for the purposes not intended. The funds set aside by the state of Florida to help people with acute medical issues have been for a long time being used to treat people who are not deserving. This situation is not only being witnessed in Florida but also in other states across the country.

According to Dr Eric Forsthoefel, various research studies have recorded that many people have been demanding for the services offered in the emergency room for reasons not justifying enough. The trend seems to date back to the early 1990s when the first research study was conducted about the increasing number of non-urgent cases being attended in the emergency department. The frequency is so much such that resources in the emergency department have been stretched to the limit. Workers in the emergency room have to offer the necessary services to the people admitted to this department as there is no option.

Various reasons have been highlighted to justify the increased number of patients choosing to take their non-urgent medical issues in the emergency room. One of the main problems is that a primary caregiver would take more than twenty-four hours before finding sufficient time to get an appointment with a patient. Some people, both with high and low income, see this time too long and they chose to take their needs to the emergency department, where they will get a professional within the shortest time possible. This issue exposes the low number of people working in the primary caregiver department.

Additionally, there is no connection between people seeking primary medical services and the primary caregivers. There is a perception that they get quality services in the emergency department are way better than those offered in the primary care department. This plays a significant role in attracting a large number of patients who do not have emergency cases to seek medical services in the emergency room. Other research studies are consistent with that conducted in the George Washington University by highlighting that young people are likely to find the services of an emergency department for medical issues that cannot be described to be urgent.

However, it is important to record that there are issues that do not play a significant role in increasing the number of patients seeking the services of an emergency room. For example, some studies have highlighted that men are likely to find the services of an emergency room as compared to women. However, other similar research studies have results that state to the contrary. Moreover, African American is more likely to seek the services of an emergency room for non-urgent medical issue as compared to Caucasians Americans, who have higher tendencies of finding the services of a medical practitioner for any health issue, centrally to African Americans.

Cancer Treatment Centers of America and Their New Arrangement

A recent collaboration with Cancer Treatment Centers of America, NantHealth, and Allscripts is resulting in a common mission that creates a custom technical solution called eviti. The bottom line is the creation and implementation of a clinical workflow that ties together various records and research results. The program is called Clinical Pathways which will inform all involved in the process of cancer treatment without disrupting the flow of information to and from the physicians’ workflow.

Looking at patientportal.me, the system has been developed with the critical input of hundreds of oncologists from all over the nation, and it consists of a very comprehensive database of cancer care data that is constantly evolving. All of the appropriate treatment options are available through Clinical Pathways, and the potential guesswork is eliminated. An entire database system is created for treatment options that are certified up to CTCA  standards where both patients and physicians can access and choose a course of action that is efficient and safe.

Critical Pathways provides an overall transparency that has heretofore been unavailable. The quality and efficiency of providing all data available to treat certain kinds of cancer and therapeutic strategies in an enormous advantage for patients and physicians alike.

Cancer Treatment Centers of America is based in Boca Raton, Florida and is a network of five hospitals that are available to adult patients who are dealing with cancer and its treatment. Cancer Treatment Centers of America or CTCA uses an approach that uses all forms of treatment from a genomic approach to all other treatment procedures from surgery, radiation, Immunotherapy and chemotherapy to attack and treat cancer.

As mentioned in the article, “Cancer Treatment Centers of America® Partners with Allscripts and NantHealth to Launch Clinical Pathways, a Comprehensive and Custom Oncology Treatment Platform,” CTCA works closely with the patient and their families in designing a treatment plan that will individualize the approach to fighting cancer and avoiding as much of the side effects as possible. Patients and their families are provided with detailed information for any treatment that is prescribed.
